Research into similar products - Film poster analysis - The Purge

Director: James Demonaco
Genre: Horror/Thriller
Lead roles: Ethan Hawke (James Sandin), Lina Headey (Mary Sandin), Max Burkeholder (Charlie Sandin) and Adelaide Kane (Zoey Sandin).
Plot: For 12 hours, all crime is legal and a wealthy family is held hostage for harboring the target of a murderous syndicate during the Purge.
Type of shot: The type of shot is an close up of the killer wearing a mask. This creates a sense of mystery as we don't know what to expect from this sinister looking person.

Lighting: One the left side of the mask there is elements of light shining through, this just shows that after day light the massacre will begin and when darkness falls which is shown on the right hand side of the mask, there will be destruction.

Use of colour: There is not much colour shown in this poster as it is trying to capture the horror of the purge. If colour was used, it would create less of a scary effect as it would give elements of brightness to the poster. By having this poster dark it creates a gloomy dark effect creating fear for the purge.

Main conventions of the poster:
- The Image is the assertive feature of the poster.
- The Film title is very effective yet simple
- There is a Clear tagline saying 'One night a year, all crime is legal' and 'Survive the night may 31st'. By having these it creates a mass panic and gets people thinking what would happen if something like this actually happened?
- The companies involved in creating the poster have been listed
- The directors other movies have been listed so people who enjoyed those films are more likely to come and visit this film as well.
